Paleo Diet Alcoholic Beverages
What is the Paleo beverage of choice for the Super Bowl? Well, beer is not paleo, and gluten-free beer is not paleo. According to CrossFit Portland’s Paleo Challenge, these are the alcoholic beverages that are ok to consume:
1) Red or White Wine
2) Nor Cal Margarita 1-2 shots of tequila, squeeze of lime, salt on the glass, soda water.
3) Vodka with a squeeze of orange and soda water
4) Gin with soda water
5) any non-sugar beverage you can create
6) No Tonic Water! Soda water is ok.
With alcoholic beverages, its your choice as to what level of paleo commitment you want to have. For me, alcohol in moderation and on special occasions is ok. My philosophy is that its ok to occasionally indulge in those things that make life fun and worth living. Even though he had no beer, Paleo man sought happiness, too!

On my new page: http://paleodiet.com/definition.htm
I include a paragraph on alcohol. This is what I wrote:
The inclusion of alcohol in the paleo diet is controversial. Our ancestors would have come upon and eaten fermented fruit. Even male butterflies get drunk on fermented fruit. Some have issues with the yeast. In Wild Fermentation (p. 127 in Amazon.com’s Look Inside) there is a recipe for spontaneous cider that requires no added sugar or yeast. Now the resulting product does not last long, but it would be paleo! No published paleo diet includes alcohol. But if you are going to drink it, pick one from fermented fruit and water it down.
Interesting stuff! Thanks.
Nice. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading your post.
Just wanted to say I really liked the post. You have really put a lot of time into your posts and it is just wonderfull!
Thank you for the short yet very informative post you have here.
Yes, I definitely agree with you, Red and white wine is something that I would recommend as a very healthy drinks as well, even recommended by many with a health benefit drinks.
Red wine is actually good for the heart, so I think, having a glass of red wine everyday is as good as taking and including fruits on your diet, not only with Paleo but to any diet that concerns weight loss and healthy heart.
Depending on your goals I have to wonder how alcohol really has a place in any diet. While the liver is busy detoxifying the alcohol it is in no position to burn fat. I believe the benefits of alcohol in diet have been overrated.
A glass of red wine every now and then helps the blood flow easier.
Thanks for this informative article! I must agree with the posters above me: a glass of red wine every day can keep the doctor away. It’s full of antioxidants, it seems: very good for your body. So yeah, I couldn’t agree more with you!
Yeah, Red wine is good for the heart, but I too choose not to drink except on one occasion which is the anniversary of my fathers death. I always have a drink for the old man!
I used to drink quite a lot socially, even though I am only 30 I choose not to bother with it now, I find it a pointless exercise. This is really due to becoming a vegan a few years back…I dont miss it!
Thanks for this post I enjoyed reading your blog!

gluten free foods are very helpful specially for those people that have very bad allergies to it `
Vodka has gluten therefore not paleo
Good information. I think red wine is good for the Paleo diet for many different reasons. And maybe vodka as well. I like your blog.

Red and White wine are one of the best drinks there is. It has health benefits. Help your blood circulate better accompanied with regular exercise and healthy food, you will have a great and healthy life.
I believe anything in moderation is okay. We know that a glass of red wine with dinner is good for the heart and beer is good for battling osteoporosis. But people with no self control should stay away from alchol, period.

Sometimes you just need to have a beer – that’s something I can agree with! However it has to feel good when you know 95% of your diet is healthy food that is great for your body. It makes indulging that much easier.
Usually I don’t drink too much as I’m a very fitness addicted person, but I want to share your cocktail with a friend of mine who has a club and maybe he can use it to make people who are looking for something with not so many calories happier. Will keep you updated

I’ll concur with those who drink red wine while eating paleo. I agree with Don in that no published diet recommends paleo-friendly alcohol but since I have no obligation to our ancestors to do precisely what they did, I see no reason not to enjoy the odd glass of red wine every now and then.
Once every couple of weeks I do have a beer though – paleo be damned!
Red wine in moderation is definitely good for you!
I definitely agree that alcohol in moderation is a good thing – whats the point in living life if you can’t enjoy it once in a while?
